Frequently Asked Questions

Will EMMA work on my Mac?

Yes. We have Macs in our office and EMMA runs quite happily on them. As a basic rule, if your machine will run Firefox, then you can run EMMA.

For PC users, we do have some additional Add-ins that enhance EMMA on PC's but these are only really of benefit to medical secretaries and filing staff.

What browser can I run EMMA on?

EMMA will run on pretty much anything that was built in the last few years so long as it can run Firefox. EMMA will run on Internet Explorer as well, though we do find that IE is a little bit slower than Firefox, which is why we don't recommend it.

Where is my data kept and is it safe?

Although EMMA is web based, EMMA can either be hosted in our datacentre (Telehouse in Docklands) or on your site. Every new client is given the option of which they would prefer. In the case that you choose to host it, we recommend that we speak to your IT team to ensure that everything is set up correctly. Please be aware that we effectively give you an EMMA 'Appliance' that just works on your server - naturally we are therefore dependent on your IT team to make sure that this is reliable. No matter where EMMA is stored, the data is always stored securely and transmitted to you over an encrypted connection to make sure that nobody can access it except you.

Backups can be scheduled to be run as frequently as you need and can either be stored in our secure encrypted storage unit (offsite from the datacentre of course) or to another location of your choice. We can advise on how best to store backups if you would like to store your own. We generally recommend that backups are run twice a day (a complete backup of your database each time).

Ascensus is also ISO 27001 compliant. This means that we have documentation and process to ensure that the work that we do and the data that we handle is as secure as it can possibly be. It also means that we have undergone an audit where independent consultants have come on site and looked under every floorboard and in every drawer to look for evidence that we are not following this process. Although we are a small company, our procedures ensure that no single person is indispensable and that we have fully documented disaster recovery processes in place to keep our business trading in the event of major issues.

What happens if I lose my internet connection?

EMMA is obviously a web based application so if you choose to have EMMA hosted solution then you will need an internet connection. However, if your EMMA is hosted by you, then this is not a requirement.

If you do wish to use the EMMA hosted solution then we recommend that you have 2 Broadband connections and we can provide consultancy and advice on the best providers to use. We also give 3G PAYG data cards out as part of the EMMA hosted package which are yours to use however you like.

Can I keep my old data?

Yes.

We have extensive experience in importing data from a variety of systems including medical data, scanned data and demographics. We tend to recommend that wherever possible, new installations should start with a fresh set of accounts as it has been our experience that other systems do not always have the most reliable of accounting systems which can lead to problems later - this does obviously depend on the system.

Can my patients book online?

EMMA allows you to invite patients to book online on a case by case basis. Once invited, these must then follow strict booking rules which will prevent them from booking slots that you do not wish them to see.
